Clear soil from between the gears after use so the head keeps rotating. Keep it dry and oil the moving parts occasionally.

Crumbles compacted soilFour star gears with nine teeth each roll through the bed and break the top layer fine. Roots and water get in.
Weeds out as you tillA hardened manganese steel knife behind the gears hooks weeds out in the same pass.
Rubber grip, easy on the handsAn ergonomic grip that takes the ache out of a long bed. Light enough to carry in one hand.
No power, no noisePush it, roll it, done. Aerates, preps for planting and keeps beds and borders weed-free between crops.

Breaks up compacted soil and takes the weed out with it.

A star shaped rotating head with four interlocking gears and nine teeth each, plus a built in weeding knife.

A hand tool for the work that happens between the beds and the edging: breaking up crusted soil, working in compost, and getting weeds out roots and all.

The head is a set of four interlocking star gears, nine teeth each, that rotate as you pull the tool through the soil.

Rotating teeth cut into compacted ground rather than skidding across it, which is what a fixed three prong cultivator tends to do on a dry crust.

At the other end is a weeding knife in hardened manganese steel, for levering out tap rooted weeds that break if you pull them.

The grip is rubber and shaped, which matters after twenty minutes.

Hand Tiller and Weeder Tool

Soil in a planted bed compacts over a season. Rain beats it down, you walk on it, and by midsummer there is a crust that sheds water instead of taking it in.

Hand Tiller and Weeder Tool

A fixed pronged cultivator skids across that crust. The rotating gear head here cuts into it, because each tooth enters the soil at an angle and the rotation pulls the next one in behind it.

Hand Tiller and Weeder Tool

That is also what makes it useful for working compost or fertiliser into the top few centimetres without turning the whole bed over and disturbing roots.

Hand Tiller and Weeder Tool

The weeding knife on the other end handles the weeds a tiller cannot. Dandelions, docks and anything else with a tap root snap off if you pull them and regrow within a fortnight. A narrow blade run down beside the root lifts the whole thing.

Hand Tiller and Weeder Tool

It is a hand tool for bed and border scale work. Breaking new ground or turning over a vegetable plot is a job for a fork or a powered rotavator: this is for the ongoing work in beds that are already planted.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You can change your mind. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you have 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason, and a further 14 days to send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this tool for?

Loosening compacted soil, weeding and aerating garden beds by hand. Use it to prep a bed for planting, work in compost or keep weeds down between rows.

How is it different from a hoe?

A hoe scrapes. This rolls. The four star gears crumble the soil as you push and pull, and the knife behind them hooks out the weeds. One pass does both jobs.

What do I get?

One hand tiller with the rotating gear head, the built-in weeding knife and the rubber grip.

How do I use it?

Push the gears into the bed and roll the tool back and forth with steady pressure. Use the knife to hook out any weeds the gears lift. Work across the bed in rows and go over it twice for deeper aeration.

Will it break up hard ground?

It breaks the top layer of compacted bed soil well. For ground that has never been dug, loosen it with a fork first, then use the tiller to crumble it fine.

Does it need power?

No. It is a manual tool. You push and pull, the gears turn.

What is it made of?

A star-shaped head of four interlocking gears with nine teeth each, a built-in weeding knife in hardened manganese steel, and an ergonomic rubber grip.

How much does it cost?

€99. Delivery is free on orders of €60 or more, so this qualifies on its own.

Are there other sizes or options?

One tiller is listed.

What do the photos show?

The tiller and its head in use on a garden bed. Plants and garden props are not included.

Which specs should I check before I buy?

The four 9-tooth gears, the manganese steel knife and the rubber grip. It is a hand tool for bed-scale work, not a powered rotavator. If anything is unclear, ask us first.

How many do I need?

One. Set the quantity on this page or in your basket.

Can I order more than one?

Yes. Set the quantity on this page or change it in your basket.

Can I use it between plants?

Yes. The head is narrow enough to run between rows in a veg bed or round shrubs without disturbing the roots, if you keep a little distance.

Will it work in stony soil?

It copes with small stones. Pick out the bigger ones first or they jam the gears.

Any safety tips?

Wear gloves and closed shoes, keep fingers away from the gears while they turn, and keep children clear while you work.

What if the ground is baked hard?

Water the bed the day before so the soil gives, or fork it over first. Do not force the gears into rock-hard ground.

How do I look after it?

Clear soil from between the gears after use so the head keeps rotating. Keep it dry and oil the moving parts occasionally.

Can I use it in pots and planters?

Yes. It is handy for aerating pot compost and preparing planting pockets in containers and raised beds.

Can I check it will suit my beds before I buy?

Yes. Tell us what soil you have and what you want to do, and we will tell you straight whether this is the right tool.

Is the price in euro?

Yes. Every price and checkout total is in euro.

What does delivery cost?

Free across Ireland on orders of €60 or more. Below that it is a flat €22, shown in the basket before you pay.

How long does delivery take?

Allow 24 to 48 hours for handling, then 5 to 7 days in transit, so about a week in total. Every order is sent tracked and the link is emailed once it ships.

Can I use a discount code?

Yes. Enter it in the basket and it takes 15% off the goods. Delivery is not discounted, and free delivery is worked out on the discounted goods total.

How do I track my order?

Use the Order Tracking page with the details we email after dispatch. If anything looks stuck, email us with your order number.

Can I return it if I change my mind?

Yes. This is a stock item, so you have 15 days from delivery to tell us (the law gives 14), then a further 14 days to send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price and the standard delivery charge. You pay the return postage unless the item is faulty.

What if it arrives damaged or wrong?

Email us with your order number and a photograph. Faulty, damaged or misdescribed goods are covered by the legal guarantee of conformity under the Consumer Rights Act 2022, which lasts two years. We pay the return postage and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back.

Can I cancel before it ships?

Yes, free of charge. Email us with your order number as soon as you can and we will stop it before dispatch.

I have a big project. Can you help?

Yes. Use the wholesale enquiry page and tell us the products, quantities and your delivery postcode.

Where do I get help?

Email theteam@customersupport.care or use the Contact page. Include the product name and your question, plus your order number if you have one.

Getting the most out of a hand tiller

4 min read LawnEdge Ireland

What it is for

Three jobs, all of them in beds that are already planted.

Breaking a crust. Soil that has been rained on and walked on develops a surface layer that sheds water. Working the top few centimetres lets water in again.

Working in compost or feed. Spread it on the surface and till it into the top layer, rather than digging the bed over and cutting through established roots.

Weeding. The rotating head takes out shallow rooted weeds as it goes. The knife on the other end deals with the ones that need lifting.

Using the tiller head

Pull it toward you rather than pushing. The gears rotate as it travels and the teeth pull themselves in.

Work at a shallow depth in a planted bed. You are aerating and mixing, not digging, and going deep in an established border means cutting roots you want to keep.

It is much easier a day or two after rain. Bone dry soil resists everything, waterlogged soil smears rather than breaking up.

Using the weeding knife

For tap rooted weeds, dandelion and dock in particular, pulling by hand almost always snaps the root and the plant is back within a fortnight.

Run the blade down alongside the root, angled slightly toward it, and lever. The point is to lift the root out whole rather than cut it.

It also works along the base of edging and paving, where weeds root into the joint and nothing else will fit.

Keeping it working

The one thing that stops this tool working is soil packed between the gears until they seize. Clear it out after each use, before it dries.

Store it dry and put a little oil on the moving parts occasionally. The manganese steel blade holds an edge well, but a few strokes with a file when it goes dull keeps the weeding easy.

Page summary

Hand Tiller and Weeder Tool (pick code hand-cultivator) sold by LawnEdge Ireland at lawnedge.irish, at EUR 99. A 2 in 1 hand tool: a star shaped rotating head made of four interlocking gears with nine teeth each, plus a built in weeding knife in hardened manganese steel, on an ergonomic rubber grip. The rotating head cuts into compacted or crusted soil where a fixed pronged cultivator skids across the surface, because each tooth enters at an angle and the rotation pulls the next in behind it; this also makes it suitable for working compost or fertiliser into the top few centimetres without turning a bed over and disturbing established roots. The manganese steel weeding knife is for tap rooted weeds such as dandelion and dock, which snap off and regrow if pulled by hand but lift whole when a narrow blade is run down beside the root. Scope: it is a hand tool for beds and borders, not a powered rotavator, so breaking new ground or turning a vegetable plot is a job for a fork or a machine. Care: clear soil from between the gears after use so the head keeps rotating, store dry, oil the moving parts occasionally. Full 14 day right of withdrawal, extended to 15 days. Delivery Ireland wide, free over EUR 60.
