Rinse mud off with a hose. If the coating gets chipped by a spade or a mower, touch it in with an exterior metal paint so the exposed steel does not corrode from that point.
Stops grass runners for goodDrive the face and spikes in and you get a barrier runners cannot cross into paths or beds. The line you cut today is still the line in five years.
Hammer it in, no trenchSeven 100 mm spikes per section. Seat it against a cut spade line and drive the spikes in with a mallet. No concrete, no landscaper.

About this product
A dark line that disappears against soil and holds its shape.
Heavy 1.5 mm steel with a protective black coating, 100 mm face, in interlocking sections. Cut to the metre.
The heavyweight of the range: 1.5 mm steel with a black protective coating, three times the gauge of the stainless strip.
Black is the colour that vanishes. Against dark soil and mulch a black edge reads as a shadow line, which is why it is the usual choice for contemporary planting schemes.
The extra thickness means it takes knocks. A mower wheel that would mark plastic and dent thin steel bounces off this.
It still flexes enough to contour with changes in level, around rocks and along a gentle slope.
Supplied in 1075 mm sections that interlock by 75 mm, with 7 spikes per length.
If the stainless range is about a bright, precise line and corten is about a finish, black steel is about durability with a low visual profile.
The 1.5 mm gauge is the headline. Thin edging is easy to install and easy to damage. At this thickness the strip resists the everyday abuse of a garden: mower wheels, wheelbarrows, spades and children.
The black coating is what protects the steel underneath, and it is also what makes the edging disappear. Against dark soil, bark mulch or a planted bed, a black edge reads as the shadow at the base of the planting rather than as a product.
It is more forgiving of uneven ground than you might expect from steel this thick. It flexes with a slope and works around rocks, which matters on a site that is not a flat suburban lawn.
The honest caveat is the coating. Where a spade or a mower chips it, the exposed steel will corrode from that point, so touch in any chips with an exterior metal paint. If you want a finish that repairs itself, corten does that by design.
Still deciding?
Not sure yet? That is fine.
This track is cut to the length you order, so it counts as made to your specification. That means the 14-day change-of-mind cancellation right under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 does not apply to it. Your rights if something is wrong with it are untouched, and we would rather answer a question now than have you order the wrong length.
If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order, including how to measure.
Putting a clean, permanent line between lawn and bed, or along a path or driveway. It holds the line, keeps bark and soil in the bed, and stops grass runners crossing over.
How high does it sit?
The face is 100 mm. Set it with most of the face below ground for a subtle line, or leave more showing to hold back a raised bed of bark or stone.
What do I get per metre?
One 1075 mm section that lays one metre once the 75 mm interlock overlaps the next, plus seven 100 mm spikes. Each length weighs about 1.6 kg.
How do I install it?
Mark your line, cut a clean vertical face along it with a spade, seat the section against the face and drive the spikes in with a rubber mallet. Overlap the next section by the interlock and carry on.
Can it follow a curve?
Yes. The steel takes gentle curves well and flexes with changes in level, rocks and slopes. It also holds a dead straight line if that is what you want.
Can I cut it?
We cut to the length you order. For a trim on site, use an angle grinder or hacksaw, wear gloves and eye protection, and file the cut end before it goes into a lawn.
What is it made of?
1.5 mm steel with a black protective coating. Three times the gauge of the stainless strip, so it takes mower and spade knocks without deforming.
How much does it cost?
€39 per metre. Delivery is free on orders of €60 or more and a flat €22 below that.
Are there other sizes or options?
One face height, 100 mm, in black. For the rusted look see the corten edging, for a bright finish see the stainless.
What do the photos show?
The edging in place along beds and lawns so you can judge the look. Plants, pots and garden props are not included.
Which specs should I check before I buy?
Face height (100 mm), section coverage (1 m with a 75 mm overlap), gauge (1.5 mm) and the seven spikes per section. If anything is unclear, ask us first.
How do I work out how many metres I need?
Measure along the line the edging will follow, going round every curve, and round up to the next metre. The overlap is already allowed for, so one section equals one metre. Check your basket before paying.
Can I order more than one metre?
Yes. Set the quantity to the number of metres you need, on this page or in your basket.
Will it suit every garden?
It holds fast in all normal soils. Very rocky ground can stop a spike, so expect to reposition one occasionally rather than force it. If you are unsure, send us a photo and your measurements before you order.
How should I prepare the ground?
Mark your line with a hose or string, clear weeds and loose stones, and check for shallow pipes or cables before you drive spikes in.
Any safety tips while fitting it?
Wear gloves and sturdy footwear, use a rubber mallet rather than a steel hammer so the coating stays intact, and keep children and pets clear while you hammer.
What if the ground is hard or stony?
Water the line the evening before so the soil is softer, and move the section a few centimetres if a spike hits a rock. Do not force it, the spike or the face will bend.
Can I use it as a retaining wall?
No. It will hold back a shallow bed of bark or stone, but it is a garden edge, not a retaining wall. It is not load bearing.
What if the coating gets chipped?
Touch the chip in with an exterior metal paint. The coating is the corrosion protection, so left alone exposed steel corrodes from that point outward. Caught early it is a thirty second job.
Can I check it will suit my garden before I buy?
Yes. Send us the measurements, a photo of the edge and what you have there now, and we will tell you straight.
Is the price in euro?
Yes. Every price and checkout total is in euro.
What does delivery cost?
Free across Ireland on orders of €60 or more. Below that it is a flat €22, shown in the basket before you pay.
How long does delivery take?
Allow 24 to 48 hours for handling, then 5 to 7 days in transit, so about a week in total. Every order is sent tracked and the link is emailed once it ships.
Can I use a discount code?
Yes. Enter it in the basket and it takes 15% off the goods. Delivery is not discounted, and free delivery is worked out on the discounted goods total.
How do I track my order?
Use the Order Tracking page with the details we email after dispatch. If anything looks stuck, email us with your order number.
Can I return it if I order too much?
This edging is cut to the length you order, which makes it goods made to your specification. Under the Consumer Rights regulations (S.I. 484/2013) the withdrawal right does not apply to it once it has been cut, so measure carefully and ask us before you order if you are unsure. Faulty or damaged goods are a different matter and are always covered.
What if it arrives damaged or wrong?
Email us with your order number and a photograph. Faulty, damaged or misdescribed goods are covered by the legal guarantee of conformity under the Consumer Rights Act 2022, which lasts two years. We pay the return postage and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back.
Can I cancel before it ships?
Yes, free of charge. Email us with your order number as soon as you can and we will stop it before dispatch.
I have a big project. Can you help?
Yes. Use the wholesale enquiry page and tell us the products, quantities and your delivery postcode.
Where do I get help?
Email theteam@customersupport.care or use the Contact page. Include the product name and your question, plus your order number if you have one.

Fitting black steel landscape edging
5 min readLawnEdge Ireland
Where black steel is the right answer
Three situations. A contemporary planting scheme where you want the division to be invisible. A site that takes physical abuse and needs an edging that survives it. And ground that is not flat, where a rigid border would need cutting and joining at every change.
If what you actually want is a visible feature edge, corten is the material. If you want the cheapest permanent line, the plastic kit is.
Getting the line right
Mark the route with a hose first and look at it from the house, not from where you are standing. Steel takes gentle curves well.
Cut a clean vertical face along the whole line with a square spade before you place any steel. With a 1.5 mm section there is no fudging this: the strip is stiff enough to bridge a wandering cut rather than follow it.
Installing
Seat the first section against the cut face, then overlap the next by the interlock. Keep the top edge at a consistent height as you go, sighting along the run every few metres.
Drive the spikes with a rubber mallet, seven per length. On stony ground expect to reposition a spike occasionally rather than force it.
Backfill against both sides and firm the soil down with your heel. On a slope, work uphill so each section sits on ground you have already firmed.
Wear gloves. Cut ends on 1.5 mm steel are sharp and worth filing before they go into a lawn.
Looking after the coating
The coating is the corrosion protection, so it is worth ten minutes of attention. Rinse mud off occasionally so you can see the run.
If a spade or a mower chips it, touch the chip in with an exterior metal paint. Left alone, exposed steel corrodes from that point outward and eventually undercuts the coating around it. Caught early it is a thirty second job.
That is the one maintenance difference between this and corten, where surface rust is the finish rather than a fault.
Not sure which material suits your ground, or how many metres a curved bed needs? Ask before you order. Free delivery across Ireland on orders over €60.
Black Steel Garden Edging (pick code black-steel-edging) sold by LawnEdge Ireland at
lawnedge.irish. Edging in 1.5 mm steel with a black protective coating, in 1075 mm sections that
lay 1000 mm with a 75 mm interlock overlap, 100 mm face height, cut per running metre with no
minimum, at EUR 39 per metre. Each section length includes 7 spikes of 100 mm. It is the heaviest
gauge edging in this range, three times the thickness of the stainless strip, so it resists mower
and spade knocks that would dent thinner steel, and it weighs 1.6 kg per length. Black is chosen
because it disappears against dark soil and bark mulch, reading as a shadow line rather than a
border product. It still flexes enough to contour with slopes, rocks and level changes. Honest
limitation: where the coating is chipped by a spade or mower the exposed steel will corrode from
that point, so chips should be touched in with exterior metal paint; corten by contrast repairs
itself by design. Cut to the customer's length, so it is made to specification and the 14 day
withdrawal right does not apply once cut, under regulation 21 of S.I. 484/2013. Delivery
Ireland wide, free over EUR 60 and otherwise EUR 22.
